Stacking Small Wins
What message would you leave for the next generation of change makers?
Don’t be afraid to ask. Ask for help, ask for an opportunity, ask for forgiveness, ask for respect. Ask what you’re thinking (within reason). In my opinion, others’ perception of you change dramatically in a positive sense when you aren’t afraid to speak up, and it gives them an eyeglass into who you are as a person with little background. As a real estate agent, I am in the service business. Finding and keeping clients who refer you to others is what generates my workload. Without asking for help from those with more experience, I wouldn’t have been able to navigate situations I had yet to encounter. Without asking for an opportunity, I wouldn’t have the ability to work with new people. Without asking for forgiveness, I wouldn’t be able to move past and learn from my mistakes. Without asking for respect, I would tolerate disrespect when it is not warranted. Asking is the first step to making progress.
I was recently given an incredible opportunity in my career that will no doubt be a cornerstone to my future success. And guess what, it almost didn’t happen. Why? Because I hesitated incessantly to ask for the opportunity. Something that was right in front of me almost slipped through my fingers, simply because I didn’t want to ask. That small bit of uncomfortable conversation filled with nervousness can turn into something beautiful. Worst case? They say no, you learn from it, and move on. While I have learned this and will continue to apply it in my career, this same thinking goes hand in hand with those who want to make a real change to the world. If something is bothering you, start asking questions. Whether it be state legislation, your school's guidelines, or an HOA’s rulebook that you feel could benefit from change, ask away. In short, you’ve got to start the conversation somewhere, so don’t let it be too late!
